Gym Challenge threads are where players can challenge the active gym, and be presented either with a battle with the Gym Leader or a different kind of challenge from them. They are open until all players have completed the gym, at which point they will be closed. Players will be using a team recorded at the time they first challenged the gym - and it should therefor be left until a little after starting.

Gym Challenge - Stone Badge 2XjyKvn

Description: Ten years on, and the Rustboro Gym is still led by Roxanne, now the head teacher of the Pokemon Training School and the only remaining challenge to Team Rocket's authority. Her recent experiences have led the gym to adopt a philosophy of standing strong against change, just as a rock would - and one of the alternate Challenges to get the Stone Badge reflects this. She is aided in her duties as Leader by a pair of Gym Trainers - Honor Roll students at her class, Elizabeth and Mikey.

Type: Rock

Philosophy: Unflinching Resistance

Options: Gym Battle, Challenge #1: ???, Challenge #2: ???

Rustboro Gym, the last paragon of what the city used to be, a bastion of knowledge and safe haven for those who had just begun their journey from Littleroot Town. It put a smile on George's face to see that it had not changed much outside of the atmosphere and the personalities of those within. Standing before the main stretch of the gym, he called out, "Greetings! The name's George, and despite my appearance, I'm here to challenge the Gym."

Standing tall, he did his best to exude confidence. Even with the recent acquisition of Salem to his team, if things went south, they were going to go south quickly. Over half his team had an allergy to the Rock type, and he'd rather make sure that Dirk, Cecillia, and Renegade never had to see the light of day in this Gym.

Roxanne had changed over the last ten years. Her body had become leaner, stronger, and she'd traded in her student's uniform for a simple brown pantsuit. Flanked by two teenagers from the school - still in their uniforms - she nodded towards the man as he entered.

"Welcome, Challenger -" She blinked. "Are those...spider bites on your head? What happened?"

Had..he not covered up those bites? Oh dear. Eye twitching, George quickly regained his composure with a smile. Roxanne was not the enemy she was merely curious...that mantra repeated itself through his head before he replied, "Oh, those? ..Let's just say Route 116 is full of guests who like to..drop in. Nothing serious though, I'll be fine."

Taking a quick glance at the two students who flanked their teacher, he realized that these two were probably her most trusted and skilled students. Most likely the ones who would also help her deal with any problems that needed to be dealt with should things happen. "Regardless, it's been a while since I've been in town, so care to inform me what challenge awaits me today?"

Roxanne shrugged it off with surprising ease, before nodding and unclipping a pokeball from her belt. "It's straightforward, today - you will battle me in a series of one-on-one battles, until three pokemon from one side has fainted. No matter what, you cannot withdraw your pokemon, it must remain until it faints. In addition..."

As she led George towards the platform he'd be standing on, the ground shuddered slightly as the two students that worked in her gym opened up some shutters and sand slowly started to blow inside, making the glass cover at the trainer platforms make much more sense. "You shall be battling within a sandstorm. Remember that you do not need to defeat me, but prove that both you and your pokemon have a truly indomitable Will. Are you ready?"

A series of 1v1s within a Sandstorm? That was an interesting scenario he had not expected. Fitting, considering the ideals the Gym embodied. And he didn't even need to win, only prove himself? Finally, a battle he could relax and just let things happen. Nothing on the line except a little bit of pride and ego. Reaching into his pack for a Pokeball, George pondered who it would be best to lead off with. Sand and the general distaste for Rock types that Flying types had immediately ruled out Renegade...Going on a gut feeling, he pulled Cecillia's Pokeball from his pack.

"Alright then, let's do this. Best of luck to both of us!" Letting loose the Pokeball, he called out, "Alright Cecillia, let's rock!"

"A...Sewaddle?"

Well...it wasn't the stupidest choice Roxanne had ever seen. At least it had super effective attacks - it wasn't a Shinx, at least. Since that wasn't a traditional starter, it was probably a weaker pokemon to lead in with - not a bad strategy. "Very well. I choose my Geodude."

It was a predictable start, one used by Rock-type specialists for years, but there was good reason for that. Low in power but dependable, it was almost impossible to go wrong with one. The boulder slammed its arms into the ground and let out a mighty roar, glaring at the bug as the sandstorm picked up.

Arena Effect: Sandstorm. 1/8th of health lost at the end of each round unless pokemon is Rock, Steel or Ground-typed. Also increases the required Accuracy for all non-melee attacks by +2 (a 2+ to a 4+, for example).

TURN ORDER
Cecilia & George
Geodude & Roxanne

Smirking at Roxanne, he shook his head.  "Afraid so.  Both me and my partner here have a game plan.  It's a bit risky, but guts and risks are an important part of any strategy.  With that said..."  George took a scan of the field.  Not much cover, that was going to be a bit annoying given the general idea he had worked out with Cecillia.  Oh well, whatever happened at this point, happened.

Mustering his voice to call through the sandstorm, George barked, "Alright let's get started!  Get in close and nail it with a Bug Bite!"  Letting out a squeak of a battle cry, the caterpillar blazed forward at what speed she could, before leaning forward to somehow take a bite out of the small boulder.

Bug Bite Damage: (2d10 + 8 + 2(STAB) + 7(ATK) - Geodude's defense)/2(Resistance)

(36 - DEF)/2 damage.
10 damage dealt.

Roxanne raised her eyebrow in surprise as the bite actually damaged the Geodude slightly, nodding in appreciation. "Well. You might not have the type advantage, but that's certainly a powerful Sewaddle you have there. Geodude, use Defense Curl."

The geodude rolled away from the bug, curling up as it did so.

Defense increased by 2 stages (50%)! Rollout augmented!

Geodude took 0 damage from the sandstorm. Cecilia took 4 damage from the sandstorm.

As the sand came in a bigger burst after the attacks, Cecillia curled into a tight ball as Overcoat took effect, nullifying the damage she would have normally taken. Nodding at the Leader's compliment he smiled. "Thank you. Cecillia is..quite dear to me. That said, even with type disadvantage don't think this will be an easy fight! Your attacks won't mean a blasted thing if you can't move! Cecillia, back off and use String Shot!"

Quickly turning around and crawling away from the curled up Geodude, Cecillia turned once more, this time letting loose a torrent of translucent string to slow the ever present barrage the Geodude would soon send her way.

Base accuracy: 3+. Sand modifier: +2.
The attack has missed.

The string hit uselessly against the ground as Roxanne frowned, taking the Overcoat into account. It wouldn't do to forget something like that again, but it would prove irrelevant in just a moment.
"Geodude...rollout!"

1d10+4(+1d12+4 from defense curl)+2(STAB)+11(ATK) = 1d10+1d12+22 damage on first rollout. 5+ to hit.

The attack has missed.

Geodude's form instead smashed into the glass covering George's booth, Cecilia having just barely made it to the side before the Rock type had arrived. Forced out of the rollout form, the Geodude returned to what he was previously and slammed a fist against the top of its body, bellowing.

Luck seemed to be on his side today, as even with the sandstorm making the String Shot not fly true, it also seemed to have slightly obscured the Geodude's vision and let Cecillia move out of the way as it corrected its course. George flinched as the rock slammed into the plexiglass wall in front of him. Thank whatever business had made them, for he would not have liked to take that Rollout. Quickly assessing the situation, George nodded. There wasn't going to be much stock in trying to stall any longer. In a battle of attrition, the Geodude most certainly had the advantage. Cecillia seemed to also have realized that, rushing towards the Geodude without any command from him. "Alright then, seems like we're on the same page. Bug Bite once more! Don't let up on the pressure!"

Attack hit. 2 Damage.

This time, the blow hardly seemed to faze the Geodude at all. Instead, the creature just wound one of its arms up, and aimed a punch at the bug's face.

Geodude used Tackle! Accuracy: 3+1 (4+)
2d8+6+11(ATK) = 2d8+17 physical damage

The attack has hit! 20-DEF damage! 11 damage dealt!
Cecilia goes to 20HP!

The punch connected with a solid thump, sending the bug flying backwards - but only for a short distance before she regained control and managed to land properly, chittering at her foe.

It is now Cecilia's turn

That Tackle looked like it did some damage, but not enough to dissuade him or Cecillia from pursuing an unlikely victory. "Get some distance and use String Shot! If it can't move we should be ale to edge out a victory!"

Backing away from the rock, the caterpillar let loose another torrent of string, hoping that this time the sand would not blow them off course.
