The events of The Hoenn League take place ten years after Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's Delta Episode. The protagonists of those games have departed for other regions to explore, and now Wally has taken the place of Pokemon Champion. Teams Magma and Aqua have both reformed into genuine charitable organizations, and for a period of time everything seemed to be going well. However, the introduction of so many new species following the taming of Primal Groudon and Kyogre to Hoenn's ecosystem has caused an upheaval, and many worry that it won't survive in the long term - with a new Team, calling themselves Team Whiplash, making numerous public appearances calling for the systematic extinction of all Pokemon not originally native to the Hoenn region.

This went over about as well as you'd expect, and Hoenn has recently become something of a small-scale guerrilla warzone between Team Whiplash and the allied forces of Team Aqua and Team Magma. To make things worse, the climate has been taken advantage of by the 'entirely legitimate' Team Rocket, who managed to acquire Devon Corporation following the death of Mister Stone in a highly questionable yet somehow legal hostile takeover, removing Steven Stone from his inheritance and much of his influence as a result.

However, this hasn't dissuaded anyone from setting out on their own adventures, and you play a group of new and relatively inexperienced trainers who have just reached Rustboro City from wherever you originally set out. With you came your starter, as well as one other pokemon that you managed to catch and train a little en-route.

Rustboro City - Taken over by Team Rocket through a buyout of Devon Corp, checkpoints have been set up preventing people from entering or leaving the city without a Trainer Card and a temporary visa, allegedly to prevent Team Whiplash from entering. In addition, suffering from an infestation of Zubats and Gligars - Roxanne and her school regularly take time out of their classes to KO the bat pokemon and give them to Devon Corp, for distribution among its Grunts - an action Roxanne dislikes, but has no other option.

Petalburg Forest - At night, several dozen young trainers from the ages of ten to fifteen have gone missing while travelling through Petalburg Forest. Rumors of a Trevenant having taken up residence and starting to kill the trainers to turn them into Phantumps are starting to spread, and it is forbidden to go through Petalburg Forest at night.

Rusturf Tunnel - Is currently shut off following a battle between Team Aqua and Team Whiplash, after the mysterious leader of Team Whiplash arrived and had his Mega Aggron wipe out the opposition, bringing down the entrance and causing significant damage to the immediate area.
